Saving the Patient Suffering from Acute Infectious Polyneuritis

This patient, a six-year-old girl, contracted acute infectious polyneuritis last December. When she contracted this illness, she began to suffer from fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and pain at the back of her neck. It was at the time when the enteric virus was prevalent, so she was treated for having contracted the enteric virus. Three days after the treatment, she was shocked to find that she was not able to move her left hand and that she had had paralysis around her neck. She was taken immediately to ER in a major hospital and was admitted to ICU for two weeks. After being discharged from ICU, her condition deteriorated. She could not move her right hand either. She stayed in the hospital for two months in total and underwent all examinations possible. However, there was no improvement in her condition. On the day she was discharged from the hospital, her family searched on the internet and found a very skilful doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. She was discharged in the morning and went to see that doctor straight away in the afternoon on the same day. My master, Dr. Chong-Kai Wen, was the skilful doctor that they found online. In February when this little patient visited the clinic, she was sickly and slumped in her wheelchair. She made no responses, nor did she want to talk. As she breathed, her diaphragm didn't move and both her chest and abdomen were depressed. Her neck was lacking in strength and support, and her limbs were paralysed. She was not able to remain seated.

Acute Infectious Polyneuritis is also known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. It often occurs in the upper respiratory tract of the patient, or after the patient has contracted a virus such as gastroenteritis. The reason why this illness is considered to be a kind of lesion in the nerve endings, resulting in respiratory failure, is that the immune system suffers from acute dysfunction and attacks the epineurium and myelin sheath of the nerves, causing lesion in nerve endings, which mainly damage the spinal root and its peripheral nerve. The term "peripheral nervous system (PNS)" originates from the fact that these nerves are peripheral to the central nervous system (CNS). CNS is comprised of the brain and spine and is in charge of sending signals that are executed by the peripheral nerves. The peripheral nerves consist of the somatic nerves and autonomic nerves; the former are made up of the movement and sensory nerves. The lesion of the peripheral nerves might affect the motor movement and sensation of the limbs and trunk.

With the treatment of my master whom I greatly respected, after receiving acupuncture for the first time, the patient had immediately shown miraculous results. On the next day when they came back for the second visit, the patient's family said that the little patient was able to sing and that her right forearm was able to move. All her family members were very pleased. After the second acupuncture session, the little patient was able to roll her body. By the fifth session, the depression of her chest and abdomen as she breathed had been eliminated. I witnessed the rapid improvement that she has made. I recalled how she was when she came to the clinic in February. Back then, she had full paralysis and sank back in the wheelchair. By mid March she had been able to get out of the wheelchair and walk with ease. Such an astonishing and magical display of medical art from my master is the reason why I have decided to follow him and learn the art of Dr Wen's contemporary acupuncture. Below is the diary of progress that has been made, video-recorded and noted down by the patient's family members,

1. The improvements in the patient's health conditions after the first acupuncture treatment:

Her breathing has become smooth. The top and bottom ends of her diaphragm no longer move up and down as she breathes.

Her neck, previously paralyzed, has gained strength and support. After her parents move her up from her bed, her back no longer requires support and she can sit on her own without being supported.

Her neck, previously paralyzed, has gained strength. With her parents protecting her neck, she is able to stand up and walk.

She can lift her right forearm that was previously paralyzed. Her lower arm can move and make circles.

Her neck, previously paralyzed, has gained strength. With her parents protecting her neck, she can turn her neck upward, downward, to the left and right.

2. The improvements in the patient's health conditions after the second acupuncture treatment:

She has been able to walk on her own slowly.

She has gained strength in her left forearm that was previously paralyzed, and is able to lift it.

Her neck, previously paralyzed, has gained strength to the extent that she is able to support it by herself.

She can turn her head upward, downward, to the left and right on her own.

3. The improvements in the patient's health conditions after the third acupuncture treatment:

She has been able to stand up from a sitting position and walk on her own.

Her right arm, previously paralyzed, has been able to make big circles.

Her neck, previously paralyzed, has gained strength to the extent that she is able to support it by herself.

With ease, she can turn her head upward, downward, to the left and right on her own.

The practice of Chinese medicine "reverses the adverse conditions." My master applied acupuncture in the ears and head of the patient. In addition, needles must be inserted at the acupuncture meridian of Yangming to treat paralysis. It is important to focus on the acupoint Sanli. At the initial phase of the treatment, the focus is to cleanse the heat in the lungs. During the middle phase, the focus is to maintain the condition of the spleen and stomach, followed by replenishing nutrition to the liver and kidneys in the last stage. On top of that, the acupoints Neck 1 and Neck 2 located on the foot are the critical points.
