肺是人體的呼吸器官,位於胸腔,左右各一,左肺分成二葉,右肺分成三葉,每個人的肺臟約有五億個肺泡,我們常說的增強肺活量,其實是在說增強肺泡的彈性。肺雖然貴為「嬌臟」,但可以靠鍛鍊變強,尤其是有氧運動對肺部最有助益。運動時產生的二氧化碳會刺激呼吸中樞,產生快速呼吸,可讓肺容量變大、鍛鍊肺泡的彈性。

肺主氣,肺為氣之本的意思是,肺是氣體內外循環的交換點,一面吸入新鮮空氣、經由氣管、支氣管到達肺泡;一面呼出體內穢氣,排出二氧化碳,同時將氧氣帶入血管,由血紅素將氧氣送到心臟,再由動脈輸送全身。因此肺對全身之氣有著升降出入的調節作用。

A human being's lungs have approximately 500 million pulmonary alveoli. Although the lungs are considered to be "delicate organs", they can be strengthened through workout. Aerobic exercises are specifically beneficial for the lungs. In return, the vital capacity will be increased and the pulmonary alveoli will become elastic.
