Treating Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) with Acupuncture

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is an acute condition. It strikes very quickly, and it is required to seize the time to treat SSNHL, the quicker the better. Clinically, patients with SSNHL are often asked if they had emotional fluctuations or if they had been stressed for a long period before the onset of SSNHL. The majority of their answers are 'yes'. There are a lot of patients in particular who have an impetuous and stormy temperament and suffer from SSNHL after experiencing an intense confrontation.

Patient A mentioned that she had suffered from SSNHL and took a trip to Taipei from France to be treated by my master. She had a gentle face but had had an impetuous temperament. She had held a supervisory role for a long time in her career life and demonstrated outstanding achievements in the industry she was in. She had a servant at home to perform household duties and had never had to worry about family matters. However, as her husband had been assigned to work abroad, reluctantly she had to give up the life she had built and accompanied her husband to make a living abroad. Being away from her previous much-admired life, she became a housewife and looked after her children. This sudden change in her role made it difficult for her to adapt.

According to this patient, after she had had a confrontation with her family, she thought everything was alright. She even had an appetite and ate a bowl of noodles. However, for some reason she suddenly felt feverish and there was a loud ringing in her right ear. In an instant, she experienced hearing loss. The ringing resonated with any sounds she heard. Even a low sound was piercing for her right ear. She was extremely frightened. My master questioned her in detail, and she indicated that she had had ringing in her ears since she was in junior high school. She had also had dizziness intermittently for two to three years. She felt dizzy when she lay on her right side in bed at night.

Later my master started inserting the needles. After the insertion, tears welled up in her eyes. With disbelief, she said that the panic-inducing resonating sounds were gone. The ringing sounds in her ear became less loud immediately and she could hear the music playing in the clinic more clearly. The patient kept saying that it was amazing and that 'after the first needle insertion, I felt my hearing becoming clear...' Observing at the clinic, I was astonished by what I heard. If you did not witness it yourself, you would not have felt such astonishment after hearing statements such as 'it's amazing!' After I witnessed it, I was speechless and not able to express how emotional I felt.

I thanked my master very much for his giving us the chance to observe at his clinic and letting me witness the effects of acupuncture treatments, the power of acupuncture, and the future of modern medicine. I have made a promise that I will spend the rest of my life learning from my master. My wish is that my master's acupuncture will become world-renowned and enable him to win the first Nobel Prize for Chinese Medicine.
