Treating Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) with Acupuncture

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is an acute condition. It strikes very quickly, and it is required to seize the time to treat SSNHL, the quicker the better. Clinically, patients with SSNHL are often asked if they had emotional fluctuations or if they had been stressed for a long period before the onset of SSNHL. The majority of their answers are 'yes'. There are a lot of patients in particular who have an impetuous and stormy temperament and suffer from SSNHL after experiencing an intense confrontation.

Acupuncture - the Beacon of Light for Patients with Parkinson's Disease

It wasn't until I started observing at my master’s clinic that I started to realize the significant number of patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) in Taiwan. PD patients are not common in either the Chinese or Western medical clinics in Taiwan, which is also the case in Mainland China. Usually PD patients go to hospitals. My master’s PD patients came not only from all over Taiwan but also from abroad. The patient I encountered during my observation was a male from the Philippines who was in his seventies. He only spoke English and found my master's clinic via the internet with the help of his friend, a Taiwanese businessman who had emigrated to the Philippines. 'We came here for the reputation of Dr. Wen,' was the first thing he said when he first came to the clinic. A grand company of five family members and friends turned up at the clinic.

Visual Field Improved Immediately with Acupuncture Treatment

What I have learnt from my observations at my master’s Chinese medical clinic is that it is fast becoming an authority on ophthalmology. Eye problems can be solved with Chinese medicine, and there are well-known Chinese herbal medicines that have been proven to be effective for treating commonly-known eye diseases such as blurry vision, eye discharge, eye-floaters, glaucoma, etc. People in general do not keep a watchful eye on glaucoma. This is because in most cases glaucoma does not have apparent symptoms. In addition to that, the majority of patients with glaucoma are older. It's likely for them to wrongly perceive that they are developing degenerative eye conditions instead, and thence become negligent. The progression of glaucoma runs from optic atrophy to visual field defects and subsequently to loss of vision.

Treating Dystonia with Acupuncture - Neck Becoming Stabilized

One day when I observed at the clinic, a first-time patient said that he had seen his neighbor’s peculiar illness being cured. He asked her which doctor had been so skillful as to be able to cure her illness. He then came to know that she had been cured by the Chinese doctor Chong-Kai Wen, so this patient came here for a visit. Out of curiosity, I asked him what peculiar illness his neighbor had contracted. He said that he didn't know and had been too embarrassed to ask her. However, he saw that she helped out at her father's breakfast cafe everyday. Previously when she worked, she had always used one of her hands to hold her face, but now, surprisingly, she was able to work with both her hands! This immediately jogged my memory – it’s the patient who had contracted a peculiar illness and had to hold her face with her hand all the time. That illness was called spasmodic torticollis, one that was very tough to treat.

Double Vision Removed with Acupuncture Treatment

The human body has twelve pairs of cranial nerves. All of these pairs except for the first and second pairs emerge from the brain stem, pass through the gap at the skull base behind the eyeballs and enter into the eye sockets. Of these twelve pairs, four are related to the eyes, namely the optic nerve (cranial nerve II, abbreviated to CN II), the oculomotor nerve (CN III), the trochlear nerve (CN IV) and the abducens nerve (CN VI).

Acupuncture - the Savior of Patients with Abducens Nerve Palsy

The human body has 12 pairs of cranial nerves, and the ones that control the lateral movement of the eyes are called the abducens nerves; they are the sixth pair of cranial nerves. Patients with abducens nerve palsy suffer from symptoms such as 'not being able to look to the sides', or 'not being able to roll the eyes.' This is also a classic type of extraocular muscle involvement. At the onset of the condition, patients' vision might become blurry. The enlargement of the extraocular muscle leads to a decrease in patients' ability to move and return the eyes, or results in the misalignment of the eyes. In some worse cases, patients might experience double vision. Generally, patients who suffer from this condition don't come to the Chinese clinics, as most of them go to seek help from western doctors. In this case, western doctors in the clinic would refer these patients to hospitals, which would possibly tackle the problem with surgery. Such tricky cases are almost unheard of in Chinese medicine. Luckily, during my observation at the clinic of my master, the Chinese doctor Chong-Kai Wen, I had not only seen patients with eye diseases every day but also encountered two patients with abducens nerve palsy.

Acupuncture Re-Positioning the Brain that Had Been Moved to the Front by Concussion.

When the young and pretty mother brought her little son to the clinic, you could tell from her face that she was torn with anxiety. She said that her son had fallen and hit the back of his head, but he kept saying that his forehead ached. He had vomited and for several days consecutively the pain had developed to the extent that he could not sleep or eat. None of the hospital check-ups, prescriptions or admission to the hospital had proven effective. The parents had been seeking medical treatments for their son but had not been able to alleviate the pain of their precious child. One could understand how tormenting it had been for the parents. The mother found the clinic of my master through an internet search; because of this, she had been rebuked by her husband, who thought that she was like a drowning man clutching a straw, even believing in the Chinese medicine that did not have any scientific basis. Therefore, before her son received the acupuncture treatment, she wanted to make sure that acupuncture would not result in any side effects. Besides, she also said that her son could not cope with pain very well and was not sure if he could accept acupuncture treatments.

Saving Patients from Hearing Loss with Acupuncture

Treating the functional degeneration or loss of the sensory system is very tricky, be it visual, auditory, olfactory, or gustatory. Therefore, it is important to protect the five sense organs when healthy. However, clinically, there are some patients whose functions of the sensory systems are congenitally weak. For these patients, although they do not overuse their sensory system, their sensory system is likely to degenerate prematurely. During my observation at the clinic, I encountered a patient who had lost the hearing in one of his ears since he was little. He was now about fifty years old and had experienced hearing loss in his other ear for several months, along with ‘fragmenting’ noises that sounded like broken TV or radio signals. He could not hear his colleagues or wife calling him from far away. When people talked to him from a close distance, they sounded very piercing to him. After contracting this illness, the pre-existent ringing in his ears had become louder. Furthermore, he had had his hearing tested in hospitals before and the results were poor. He had received hyperbaric therapies and taken steroids, B vitamins and western medicines for boosting blood circulation, but none of them had improved his condition. As a result, the patient had been so anxious that he could not sleep. He worried that if he could not hear even with the remaining ear, his life would become black and white.
